Police seek man who robbed cabbie in Urbana
URBANA — Urbana police are looking for a young man who robbed and stabbed a cabbie in that city Tuesday night.
Sgt. Dan Morgan said the 61-year-old driver for Yellow Cab was not seriously injured in the attack, which occurred about 7:50 p.m. in north Urbana.
Morgan said the driver picked up a fare at an apartment complex at 904 N. Broadway Ave. The man directed the cabbie to a house but after a couple of blocks ordered him to stop.
Seated behind the driver, the would-be fare produced a knife, put it to the driver's neck and said, "Give me all that (expletive)," Morgan recounted.
Morgan said the driver looked over his shoulder, saw the knife and felt it poke his neck. He threw the money in the robber's face and tried to get out of the cab but was slowed by his seat belt.
The robber then stabbed the cabbie in the forearm, got out and ran. He was last seen running east through a field in the 900 block of North Cunningham Avenue, Morgan said.
Morgan said the cabbie was treated and released for his wounds at Carle Foundation Hospital.
The cabbie described the robber as a black man, about 18 to 22 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a 2-inch Afro hairdo, a multi-colored brown jacket and dark jeans.
Morgan said there was some cash left behind in the cab but no knife.
