Man sentenced to prison for hitting police officer
URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted striking a police officer has been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.
Jeremiah Johnson, 37, who listed addresses on Florida Avenue and Silver Street in Urbana, pleaded guilty Monday before Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis to aggravated battery. He admitted that on Nov. 26, 2010, he elbowed Champaign police officer Matt Rush in the chest.
Another charge of obstructing justice alleging he flushed cannabis down a toilet that same day was dismissed.
In other cases recently resolved in Champaign County with guilty pleas:
— Melvin L. Dudley, 52, who listed an address in the 600 block of East Beardsley Avenue, Champaign, was sentenced to a year of probation and ordered to make restitution of $250 to Miller Enterprises in Champaign.
Dudley pleaded guilt to theft with a prior burglary conviction, admitting that on May 11, he stole scrap metal from the business on Cardinal Road.
— Paul D. Shaw, 27, who listed an address in the 1000 block of South Smith Road, Urbana, was sentenced to 30 months of probation and six months in the county jail for felony theft.
He pleaded guilty to stealing used air conditioners that were in the back of a truck belonging to Hadley Food Service, 51 E. Chester St., C, on July 20.
He was also ordered to make $1,200 restitution to Hadley.
— William L. Ayres, 44, whose last known address was in the 500 block of East MacArthur Drive, Urbana, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to 30 months of probation and fined about $2,500.
He admitted that in October 2006 he had less than 15 grams of heroin in the 900 block of North Third Street in Champaign. A more serious charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance was dismissed.
Court records show the charges against Ayres were filed in October 2009 and have been the subject of several pretrial motions in the intervening two years.
— James B. Harper, 20, who listed an address in the 1300 block of North Lincoln Avenue, Urbana, was sentenced to a year of probation and ordered to make $550 restitution to a man whose computer he admitted stealing.
Harper pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft, admitting that on May 8, he took a Macbook Pro from the Undergraduate Library on the University of Illinois campus.
Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said Harper, who sold the computer on Craigslist, claimed he had bought it and didn't know it was stolen.
Weber said in return for Harper's plea, she dismissed an unrelated unlawful receipt of a credit card case against Harper alleging he had credit cards that had been stolen from the UI Activities and Recreation Center in March.
— Robert Haley, 25, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Kerr Avenue, Urbana, was sentenced to two years of probation for possession of a controlled substance. He admitted that on Jan. 26, he had less than 15 grams of amphetamine in his apartment on Kerr Avenue.
Other charges alleging he obstructed justice by flushing cannabis down the toilet and possession drugs with the intent to sell them were dismissed.
He was also fined about $900.
— Jason Bolt, 34, and Darrel Bolt, 36, both of Arthur, pleaded guilty in June and July respectively to the armed robbery of the Cracker Barrel, 2101 N. Kenyon Road, U, that happened Oct. 5, 2010.
The brothers were sentenced to 25 years in prison for that, to be served at the same time as 25-year sentences they received in Coles County after pleading guilty there to the Oct. 3 armed robbery of the Holiday Inn Express in Mattoon.
In the Cracker Barrel holdup, two men entered just before 10 p.m. and ordered everyone to the floor at gunpoint. One of the men forced the manager to open the safe in the office. The robber grabbed the cash and both men left without hurting anyone.
4 1/2 years for elbowing a cop in the chest. Now that's funny. You have to be tough to be a cop and I’m sure the cop had a bullet resistant vest that protected him. Eventually the bad guys are going to have had enough and take revenge on society. Not individually, but as an organized group destroying our infrastructure and committing incredible chaos against those who have oppressed them. As a nation we are going to reap what we sow. The end times are approaching folks and when society collapses law enforcement will take its wealth it has stolen and run off with their families, leaving behind the bad guys your system has tortured to take their revenge on you and your families. May God have mercy on us all when the rapture occurs and only evil remains to seek its revenge.
