Two people arrested in aggravated battery in which homeless man died

CHAMPAIGN — Two people have been arrested in connection with an aggravated battery of a homeless man Friday morning in Champaign.

According to a police report, officers were called to the 300 block of East Park Street, C., about 8:30 a.m. Friday to respond to a report of an unconscious man found lying next to a building.

The man, identified as Russell Allen Stokes, 54, who was listed as homeless, was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was pronounced dead at 12:54 p.m. Sunday, according to Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.

After investigating the incident, Champaign police arrested two people on Saturday afternoon in connection with the aggravated battery.

Jermaine L. Davis, 36, who listed an address in the 300 block of East Park Street, C., was arrested for aggravated battery and Constance Y. Chapple, 45, who listed the same address, was arrested for obstructing justice.

Both of them were taken to the Champaign County jail.
