Hoopeston man arrested during traffic stop in Rantoul

URBANA — A Hoopeston man is scheduled to appear in court with his attorney on Sept. 30 after police found suspected cocaine and a loaded handgun during a traffic stop early Sunday morning in Rantoul.

Brian Swinford, 41, who listed an address in the Hoopeston, was charged on Monday with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and armed violence.

According to Rantoul Police Chief Paul Farber, a police officer pulled over a truck driven by Swinford at 1:17 a.m. Sunday on U.S. 45 in Rantoul after the officer saw the truck appear to weave from one lane to another.

When the police officer reached the vehicle, Farber said, the officer became suspicious about the possible presence of drugs, so a police dog was brought to the scene.

When the officer asked Swinford to step out of the truck, the report said, the dog alerted to the presence of drugs, and police found a bag containing a white powdery substance that appeared to be suspected cocaine on Swinford's person. Farber did not have information on how much of the substance was found in the bag.

When police searched the truck, they found a loaded handgun between the seats and not in its case, Farber said. Police then arrested Swinford and took him to the Champaign County Jail.

Swinford was released after posting 10 percent of a $25,000 bond.
