Teen pleads guilty in Villa Grove arson, sentenced to 3 years' probation

TUSCOLA — A Villa Grove teen has been released from detention after pleading guilty to setting fire to a 100-year-old building in downtown Villa Grove in August.

The 14-year-old pleaded guilty to arson in a juvenile court hearing Wednesday, admitting he set the fire on Aug. 10 that destroyed the property at 10-12 S. Main St.

Under the terms of an agreement worked out between Assistant State's Attorney Kate Watson and Public Defender Jim Lee, the youth was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to have no contact with the 9-year-old who allegedly helped him set the building on fire.

State's Attorney Kevin Nolan said that boy has also been charged with arson and criminal damage to property but his case has not been resolved. He remains free because he is too young to be held in a detention center.

Watson said the teen was also ordered to perform 100 hours of public service, obey the rules his parents set for him, and submit to a psychological evaluation and treatment, including residential treatment for behavioral issues if that is recommended.

Watson said the boys will also be ordered to make restitution but the amount has not been determined yet. A hearing will be held Nov. 2 before Judge Mike Carroll to sort that out.

The teen had been held in detention since his arrest Aug. 16.

The rubble of the destroyed building remains where it collapsed. Scores of firefighters from at least 18 area fire departments worked hours to put it out.
