Man charged with burglary, sex crimes, DUI

URBANA — A maintenance worker for an Urbana apartment complex has been charged with entering an apartment early Friday and inappropriately touching a resident as she slept.

Juan Rodriguez, 43, who listed an address in the 1900 block of Winchester Drive, Champaign, was charged Friday with residential burglary, criminal trespass, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, criminal sexual abuse and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Urbana police investigator Shaun Cook said about 2 a.m. Friday, a 36-year-old woman living in an apartment in the 1100 block of Colorado Avenue in Urbana awoke to feel someone rubbing her leg. She screamed and the man ran out, getting into a white van.

Cook said the woman, her son and her brother identified the man as Rodriguez, an employee of Campus Property Management whom they recognized from doing repairs previously in their apartment.

A Champaign County sheriff's deputy spotted the van near Greencroft and Kirby Avenue in Champaign about 3:25 a.m. and stopped it for improper lane usage. Rodriguez smelled of alcohol, the report said.

Cook said Rodriguez told police he had been at an Urbana bar when he decided to go to the apartment of a woman with whom he was having an affair. He could not supply the woman's name or phone number, Cook said.

Rodriguez said he knocked on her doo,r but she instructed him to go next door. He then tried that door and found it unlocked. When he entered, he heard a woman scream so he left. He denied he touched her.

Police took maintenance keys to the building that Rodriguez had with him.

Cook said the woman whose leg was rubbed said she had no personal relationship with Rodriguez. Police found no signs of forced entry to her apartment, he said.

The most serious of the charges against Rodriguez is the residential burglary. He faces four to 15 years in prison if convicted of that.

Judge John Kennedy set Rodriguez's bond at $50,000 in the felony case and $3,000 in the driving under the influence case. He was told to be back in court Sept. 30 with his own attorney. He was also ordered to have no contact with the woman or her apartment building.
