Woman arrested over purse theft from home
URBANA — An Urbana woman who police said led them on a chase is being held at the Champaign County jail on $25,000 bond following her arrest over the weekend for residential burglary in Champaign.
Autumn Boastick, 31, who listed an address in the 3600 block of East Curtis Road, U., pleaded innocent on Monday to residential burglary.
According to a police report, a 58-year-old woman came home in the 1200 block of North Champaign Street, after 6 p.m. Sunday and placed her purse over a chair in her kitchen. As the woman went to speak with her husband in another room, they heard the back door slam. When the husband went to the back door, he saw a woman holding his wife's purse in the driveway.
The husband began to chase the woman but later gave up and called police.
The wife told police that the purse contained her driver's license, Social Security card, credit card, insurance cards, cash and her cellphone.
When the husband spotted the woman again in the neighborhood about a half hour later, he called police. The woman, identified as Boastick, ran away when officers told her to stop, and Boastick tried to wedge herself between a building and a handicapped ramp, according to the report.
Assistant State's Attorney Stephanie Weber said Boastick had to be pepper-sprayed before she could be taken into custody.
Police said they recovered the victim's wallet and $86 in cash along the path that Boastick ran away.
Judge John Kennedy ordered Boastick to have no contact with the home on Champaign Street and set her next court appearance for Nov. 1.
