Rantoul mother accused of whipping her kids
RANTOUL — A Rantoul woman who allegedly disciplined her children by whipping them with electrical cords has been criminally charged.
Takeya Johnson, 25, who listed an address in the 600 block of Autumn Fields Lane, Rantoul, was charged Monday with two counts of aggravated battery to a child alleging that between May and Sunday, she struck two of her children with cords.
Rantoul police Sgt. Marcus Beach said on Sunday, relatives noticed injuries on the girls, both under the age of 10, that were consistent with being beaten.
They brought the injuries to the attention of police, who interviewed the girls. The children told police their mother used cords from a hair flattening iron and a cell phone charger to strike them when they misbehaved.
Beach said the Department of Children and Family Services took protective custody of those girls and other children belonging to the woman.
Johnson is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond and has been ordered to have no contact with the children named in the charges. She is due back in court Oct. 7.
