Man charged with home invasion in July incident

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man has been charged with home invasion for allegedly forcing his way into a Champaign home and hitting a pregnant woman in July.

Audie Wright, 21, who listed an address in the 1700 block of South Mattis Avenue, was arraigned Monday on the Class X felony charge that had been filed in late August.

The charge alleges that on July 21, he and another man, who remains at large, forced their way into a home in the 2000 block of Broadmoor Drive and beat up a couple who had been sleeping.

A Champaign police report said the resident answered a knock at their door and the man who has not yet been arrested punched him twice in the face with a closed fist.

As the resident tried to defend himself, Wright allegedly went in the bedroom and struck the woman in the face several times and kicked her in the stomach. She was seven months pregnant at the time and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The report said Wright and the other man ran from the house with the male resident chasing them but neither he nor police could find them that morning.

Court records show Wright was arrested Friday. He is also being held on unrelated charges of driving under the influence and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. His bond is $170,000 in the combined cases.

He's due back in court Nov. 8 on the felony case.
