Champaign teen pleads guilty to armed violence in connection with Douglas County stabbing

TUSCOLA — A Champaign teen is scheduled to be sentenced in December after he pleaded guilty on Tuesday to armed violence in connection with the Oct. 10, 2010, stabbing of an Atwood man.

Zakary Giannetti, 17, who listed an address in the 2000 block of Broadmoor Drive, Champaign, pleaded guilty to one count of felony armed violence.

As part of a plea agreement, Giannetti also stipulated to a finding that his victim suffered great bodily harm, which means Giannetti must serve at least 85 percent of whatever sentence he will get, according to Douglas County States's Attorney Kevin Nolan.

Giannetti faces a sentence of between 10 and 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on Dec. 7 by Judge Mike Carroll, who ruled earlier that Giannetti should be tried as an adult.

According to a plea agreement, five counts of attempted murder are being dismissed, Nolan said.

According to a police report, Giannetti wounded Danny Fischer, 31, of Atwood in the parking lot of the Hillside Manor Apartments in Atwood at about 12:15 a.m. Oct. 10, 2010.

Nolan said he believes there was antagonism between the two men, whose girlfriends were both friends.

He said police recovered a kitchen butcher knife that they believe Giannetti used to stab Fisher.

According to Nolan, Fischer spent a couple months in the hospital and several more months in a nursing home following the stabbing and is currently cared for at his mother's home.
