Man sentenced to jail in drug case

URBANA — A Bloomington man has been sentenced to 180 days in the county jail after he pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge in connection with an incident earlier this year in which a police officer was injured.

Aaron L. Francis, 22, who listed an address in Bloomington, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to possession with the intent to deliver cannabis.

As a result of a plea agreement, a second charge of aggravated battery to a police officer was dismissed.

Judge Tom Difanis sentenced Francis to 30 months of probation, to pay court costs and to serve 180 days in jail, with credit for two days already served.

According to a University of Illinois police report, the narcotics unit arrested Francis following a sting operation in a parking lot in the 300 block of East Green Street, Champaign, on April 15. The report said the controlled buy was part of a joint effort between the UI and Boulder, Colo., police departments.

The report said Francis admitted to police he had been involved with drugs that were being shipped to Illinois from Boulder.

Police said Francis took delivery of about 30 ounces of marijuana with an estimated street value of $5,500 and then tried to drive away after police identified themselves.

Police chased Francis' vehicle to the 700 block of South Fourth Street, where the vehicle went airborne over a cement retaining wall.

The report said Francis struck a police officer with the vehicle's side-view mirror during the chase. The officer was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment for minor injuries.

After the arrest, police confiscated more than $5,300 from the vehicle, the report said.
