Woman charged with burglary, possession of stolen property
CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign woman has been charged with residential burglary and possession of stolen property.
Akemia Slaughter, 19, who listed an address in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard, was arraigned Thursday on the charges that she, or someone else, broke into another apartment at the University Village complex Saturday afternoon and stole multiple items.
Champaign police Lt. Jon Swenson said Slaughter is believed to have acted with others, but police were unable to find anyone else.
Doors were kicked in at two apartments in the same building, and multiple items — including electronics, televisions, DVD players, home furnishings and food — were stolen.
Swenson said many of those items were recovered in Slaughter's apartment. She was arrested Saturday and, after a weekend appearance in bond court, told to be back in court Thursday.
If convicted of the more serious residential burglary charge, she could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison.
Judge Richard Klaus told Slaughter to be back in court on Nov. 15. She remains free on bond.
