UI student faces charges in burglaries

URBANA — A University of Illinois student arrested early Monday morning for a series of burglaries is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 8 after he asked for more time to hire an attorney.

Steven S. Labana, 18, who listed an address in Bloomingdale, was formally charged on Monday with three counts of residential burglary and one count of burglary.

Officers arrested Labana about 1:20 a.m. Monday after he was allegedly seen using a crowbar to break into a vehicle parked in the 1100 block of South Goodwin Avenue in Urbana. A window of the vehicle was broken, and money had been removed from the vehicle’s center console.

Police said a witness also saw Labana attempting to get into a nearby vehicle, which had been scratched, and another witness said Labana had kicked a nearby scooter.

Police said Labana admitted his involvement in these incidents.

Following the arrest, police connected Labana to a series of residential burglaries at Weston Hall, 1209 Euclid Street, C, on Sunday morning.

Two Weston Hall residents reported someone had come into their room after 2:30 a.m. and had taken $25 from one wallet and $110 from another wallet.

At 4 a.m. a student in Weston Hall reported waking and finding a man matching Labana’s description going through a wallet and then fleeing.

At 4:45 a.m. a woman in Weston Hall was awakened to see a man going through her wallet. Police said $28 had been taken from the wallet, and a laptop computer had been unplugged.

Police said Labana admitted going into several dorm rooms that morning. Police later found clothing matching that reportedly worn by the burglar. They also found cash alleged to have been stolen hidden inside a can in his room.

Judge Richard Klaus ordered Labana to have no contact with Weston Hall or the victims and set his total bond at $20,000.

UI Police Department Captain Skip Frost told Dave Gentry and Elizabeth Hess during the WDWS NewsTalk 1400-AM morning show Monday that Labana was arrested around 1 a.m. Monday.
