Firefighters at empty building in Bement
BEMENT — Firefighters from five departments responded to a report of a fire at a building in downtown Bement on Tuesday afternoon.
The empty building showed smoke but no flames, according to Bement Fire Chief Steve Rittenhouse.
Firefighters from Bement, Atwood, Ivesdale and Monticello were helping at the unoccupied building, which is owned by Jeff Funk. The alarm went out shortly after 3:20 p.m.
Rittenhouse said firefighters were trying to clear the smoke from the building and bringing in an aerial unit to get to the roof to see whether to ventilate it. An aerial truck from Cornbelt Fire Protection District had arrived about 4:30 p.m.
The chief said the cause might be related to the building's furnace or electrical systems, but couldn't be certain until firefighters could get a closer look.
