Savoy man arraigned on child pornography charge from 2009

URBANA — A Savoy man accused of possessing child pornography more than two years ago is set to be back in court in December.

Darren Walters, 32, whose last known address was in the 100 block of Burwash Avenue, was arraigned late last week on a warrant that was issued in August 2010.

The two felony counts allege that Walters had pornographic photos of children he knew to be under age 18 on his computer in June 2009.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz said the matter came to the attention of Champaign police in June 2009 when Walters was being treated at an area hospital for reportedly hurting himself. When the officer inquired why, Walters told him he had done an "unspeakable act," which the officer later learned was looking at child pornography.

Champaign County sheriff's investigators obtained a search warrant for his home and took his computer, which was sent to the state crime lab.

When investigators tried to interview him, Walters said his attorney told him not to talk.

Sheriff's investigator Duane Roelfs said it was in mid-March 2010, that the state crime lab notified his office that alleged pornography was found on the computer. A warrant was issued for Walters' arrest in August 2010.

Walters appeared in court Friday for the first time on the charges.

His attorney, Elisabeth Pollock of Urbana, said neither she nor her client knew that a warrant had been issued for Walters' arrest last year. She said the sheriff's office knew she was representing him but never contacted her about the warrant. She said Walters has been living in the area and working ever since the incident that got the police involved initially.

Roelfs said he was also unaware a warrant had been issued.

Pollock said Walters was arrested in early October by DeWitt County sheriff's deputies while fishing at a lake there.

Walters is free on bond and due to be back in court Dec. 20.
