Teens charged with possession of stolen vehicle
URBANA — Two Champaign teens accused of possessing a stolen van that was involved in a series of crimes are due back in court in late November.
Davonte Johnson, 18, and Anthony Davis, 17, who listed different addresses in the 2400 block of North Neil Street, were both charged Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court with possession of a stolen vehicle, a Class 2 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison upon conviction.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz said about 8 p.m. Saturday, a Champaign police officer saw a van at First Street and University Avenue that had a license plate registering to a Ford car that had been stolen in Vermilion County several weeks ago.
The van had also been reported stolen Oct. 17 from Seymour and earlier on Saturday was apparently driven by someone involved in the theft of liquor from a convenience store on North Cunningham Avenue in Urbana.
Rietz said since being stolen two weeks earlier, the van had reportedly been involved in hit and run accidents and gasoline thefts, but she's waiting for police reports about those incidents.
The van sped away from the Champaign officer who tried to stop it at First and University, running two stop signs and going into Urbana.
Other officers joined in the pursuit and followed the van on to Interstate 74, where it drove more than 100 mph, exiting the interstate on North Neil Street near Market Place Mall. It then ran another red light and went over an embankment before stopping in the Menards parking lot. The occupants got out and ran.
Champaign police, helped by citizens, found Johnson and Davis at the Town Center Apartments on North Neil Street. Both admitted they knew the van was stolen and each claimed the other was the driver, according to Rietz.
Rietz said there were open and closed bottles of alcohol in the van.
Davis was later identified as the driver of the van who took off after a hit and run accident in Rantoul on Oct. 25.
Both teens have other pending felonies — a burglary case for Johnson and burglary and aggravated battery cases for Davis — which means if they are convicted of those crimes as well as the charges filed Monday, they would have to serve consecutive prison terms.
Each is being held on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be back in court Nov. 29.
