Urbana man arraigned in abduction case
URBANA — An Urbana man accused of trying to lure three children into his truck on Sunday is due back in court Nov. 22.
Nathan J. Ross, 31, who listed an address in the 1200 block of Cole Place, was arraigned Wednesday on three counts of child abduction, alleging that on Sunday morning he tried to get two boys, age 11, and a girl, 13, to get in his pickup truck in Urbana.
Even though Ross never had physical contact with the children and they did not get in the truck, the charge is still called child abduction. It's a Class 4 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to one to three years in prison upon conviction.
Urbana police arrested Ross for disorderly conduct following the incident, which occurred near Philo Road and Colorado Avenue. He posted bond and was released from jail Sunday then failed to appear in court Monday so a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was picked up in Douglas County on Tuesday night and returned to Urbana.
Judge Richard Klaus left Ross' bond at $100,000. Ross said he wanted time to hire his own attorney.
