Smoldering chair, taken outside, catches house on fire in Paxton

PAXTON — A home on Roselawn Drive caught fire early Thursday from a smoldering chair that was placed outside the house after being burned by a cigarette.

Paxton firefighters responded to the residence at 1176 Roselawn Drive about 1 a.m. Thursday, according to Fire Chief Denny Kingren.

Joshua Henderson, who lives at the residence, told Kingren a lit cigarette caught a chair on fire inside the home. Henderson then put out the fire and placed the still-smoldering chair outside, Kingren said.

“He told me he thought he had placed it away from the home enough,” Kingren said. “Two hours later, the east side of the building was on fire.”

Kingren said the edge of the house caught fire, and the fire spread “up in the attic just a bit.”  He said the damage was not “extensive,” and no injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation, but Kingren said it appears accidental.

About 20 firefighters responded and were on scene from about 1-3 a.m., Kingren said.
