Two men treated after 3-vehicle collision

CHAMPAIGN — Two men were treated at Carle Hospital Tuesday night after a three-vehicle accident in west Champaign.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said the accident happened about 5:40 p.m. when Darrell D. Erickson, 86, backed a car out of a private driveway in the 2300 block of South Staley Road.

He did not see an oncoming southbound truck driven by Michael Collins, 51, of Arthur, who swerved to the right to avoid hitting Erickson.

Erickson's car struck the back end of Collins' truck, pushing it into the northbound lane. A third car headed north, driven by William W. Shilts, 70, of Champaign, then hit Erickson's car, which came to a stop after hitting a guardrail on the east side of the road.

Both Erickson and Shilts were taken to Carle for treatment of minor injuries.

Erickson was given a ticket for failure to yield from a private drive.

No, the NG wants to publisize the fact they were elderly.  Next they will find a way to blame the CPD fir these accidents.
