Murder charges filed against Danville man

DANVILLE — The Vermilion County State's Attorney's office filed formal charges of murder Tuesday against Michael Gibbs in connection with the death of his mother who was found dead in her apartment on Christmas Day.

Gibbs, 44, of Danville was charged in Vermilion County Circuit Court with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery-great bodily harm. He's being held at the Vermilion County Jail on $1 million bond. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 12.

He was arrested by Danville police Sunday afternoon on preliminary charges of murder in connection with the death of Ethel Gibbs, 84, who was found in her Danville apartment by a cousin who had come to check on her.

An autopsy conducted on Tuesday indicated that Ethel Gibbs of Danville died from blunt force trauma, according to Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson.

Law-enforcement officials have not said publicly how Michael Gibbs was related to Mrs. Gibbs, but according to friends and family members, he's her son and only child.

Ethel Gibbs was found in her apartment shortly before noon Sunday by her cousin, Carol Danbury of Danville, who immediately called Danville police.

Danbury had stopped by Mrs. Gibbs' apartment at Immanuel Senior Residences, 1415 Eastview Ave. in the Holiday Hills area of Danville, because she had not heard from her that morning and had not seen her at church.
