URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a knife and a frying pan while intoxicated has been charged with aggravated unlawful restraint.

Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said Raouf Berrabah, 21, of the 600 block of West Main Street, was arrested about 2 a.m. Sunday for an incident that happened at his apartment.

Morgan said Berrabah's 27-year-old girlfriend from Normal reported that Berrabah had been drinking and became angry and violent. He began breaking several items, including a computer, computer monitor and CD player, inside his apartment.

When she tried to run from the apartment, he allegedly shut the door and locked it, telling her she would not be leaving.

Morgan said the woman related that Berrabah then cornered her in the kitchen, where he broke a broom, then banged a frying pan on a cabinet and a wall very near her head. He allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and pointed it at her, instructing her to come into another room.

Morgan said the woman recalled that she had pepper spray in a coat pocket, went and got it and sprayed Berrabah in the face before running from the apartment.

She ran to Carle Hospital, a couple blocks north, and contacted police, who found Berrabah in his apartment.

Morgan said he admitted holding a frying pan and a knife but didn't recall why he had been sprayed with pepper spray.

Berrabah’s next court appearance was set for Feb. 8.
