Urbana lawyer subject of state disciplinary complaint

SPRINGFIELD — The agency that disciplines Illinois attorneys has filed a complaint against an Urbana attorney alleging he made false statements about Champaign County judges.

The Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission filed a complaint Dec. 8 against Brian Sides, 42, alleging he made false and improper statements regarding Associate Judge Chase Leonhard and his handling of a 2006 small claims suit in which Sides was the respondent.

The seven-page complaint, available at the ARDC's website, details several of Sides' alleged indiscretions. They generally deal with statements Sides made in court documents in the small claims case after a $9,409 default judgment had been entered against him in 2006.

The ARDC commissioner alleges that Sides also made false statements about Associate Judge John Kennedy, to whom the case was reassigned when Leonhard recused himself in 2010. Sides also lashed out in his filings at Presiding Judge Tom Difanis, who is responsible for assigning cases.

"(Sides') statement that all of the judges in Champaign County colluded against (him), or did so because (he) appealed an ordinance violation ruling, was false," the ARDC complaint said.

The ordinance violation referred to was a July 2001 incident in which Sides was cited for public indecency after he was caught on a video surveillance camera having sex in his car next to the loading docks of the Target store on North Prospect Avenue.

He exercised his right to a jury trial, lost and was fined $500. The Fourth District Appellate affirmed his conviction. Sides also filed a federal civil rights cases against the city and the officers who arrested him, which was dismissed. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals also affirmed the dismissal.

Sides did not return calls placed to his business number seeking comment on the complaint, which ARDC records indicate was served on him late last month.

Sides has been licensed as an attorney in Illinois since November 2002.

More information is available at  "caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1389378.html"  if you want more details.  It is public information.  Either the woman in question was on break; or he was too cheap to rent a motel.  He felt he was discriminated against for many reasons.  One of them was that the woman was not fined also.  Of course, there was police brutality also because he had to stand outside of his car on a hot day.  A real stand-up guy.  He should have just paid the fine; and moved to another area to "practice" law.  Check out attorneys before you hire one.  This county has more than enough to go around.  Remember Justice depends on how much you can pay for it.
