URBANA — A man who pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in Champaign County has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Heath Baumann, 39, for whom court records show addresses in Arcola, Charleston and Mattoon, pleaded guilty Wednesday before Champaign County Judge John Kennedy to aggravated driving under the influence, a Class 2 felony.

Assistant State's Attorney Sam Rosenberg said Baumann was arrested March 8, 2011, in north Champaign after a Champaign police officer saw him cross the middle line, then make the turn too wide from Prospect Avenue on to Marketview Drive. His tires went on the curb and over the grass, Rosenberg said.

Rosenberg said because it was raining, the officer took Baumann to a nearby motel where he performed field sobriety tests under a portico. He showed impairment and was arrested. Rosenberg said Baumann's blood-alcohol content was 0.182 percent, more than twice the limit for a motorist to be presumed intoxicated in Illinois.

Rosenberg said Baumann has three prior DUI convictions. He also has unresolved DUI cases from September 2009 in Knox County and from early 2011 in Coles County.

He was also fined $3,250 and given credit for 209 days already served in jail. He is eligible for day-for-day good time.
