Cars collide when one runs out of gas on I-74
CHAMPAIGN — A Tinley Park man whose vehicle ran out of gas was treated at an area hospital following a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 74 in Champaign on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a state police report, Desi Brandon Lee Cordova, 20, who listed an address in Tinley Park, was driving a 2003 Hyundai Elantra west on I-74 about a quarter mile west of the Prospect Avenue exit when his vehicle ran out of gas at 1:16 p.m. Tuesday.
Rather than moving his car from the driving lane to either shoulder, police said, Cordova parked his car in the left lane.
Mark Musselman, 48, who listed an address in Mahomet, was driving a 2002 Subaru west on I-74 and was unable to change lanes due to traffic, so he was unable to avoid crashing into Cordova's car.
Cordova was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was treated and released.
Musselman refused medical treatment, according to the report.
Police ticketed Cordova for driving with no valid driver's license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and parking where prohibited.
