Man wanted for Wapella robbery hospitalized in Chicago
CLINTON — A Chicago man remains hospitalized in Chicago after fleeing from U.S. marshals trying to arrest him for an armed robbery that happened in DeWitt County in April.
DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner said Alexander Munos, 40, was arrested Jan. 20 in connection with the holdup of a jewelry courier at a Casey's General Store in Wapella on April 6.
Shofner said Munos jumped from the third floor of a Chicago apartment building when marshals tried to arrest him on the armed robbery warrant issued in DeWitt County on Nov. 2.
Shofner said Munos has been hospitalized with a broken hip since that day. The sheriff said he doesn't know when Munos will be returned to DeWitt County to face the charge. Bond on his warrant was set at $250,000.
Deputies are still looking for two other people believed involved in the robbery. A fourth person, Vanessa Ortiz, 29, of Chicago, was arrested the day of the incident has since been sentenced to prison.
According to Shofner, on the night of the robbery, the jewelry courier left the Chicago area en route to Decatur with $750,000 worth of jewelry and stopped in Wapella to get gas.
"We have reason to believe the assailants were following him and seized upon that opportunity. Three approached him with guns drawn and stole his cargo. We immediately started getting 911 calls from other patrons. It was 7:50 p.m. on April 6. It's a very busy location that time of evening," Shofner said.
Deputies chased the vehicle that crashed in Wapella and recovered all the jewelry. Ortiz was arrested that night, but the others got away.
"We expect there will be more arrests. This has been a long drawn-out investigation," Shofner said, praising his detectives and other agencies that helped with Munos's arrest.
