Rantoul man awaiting sentencing arrested again
RANTOUL – A Rantoul man already facing sentencing on burglary and drug charges is now accused of breaking into five Rantoul businesses over the weekend.
Kyle Maxey, 17, who listed an address in the 1000 block of St. Andrew Circle, Rantoul, is due to return to court July 1 for a pretrial hearing on five counts of burglary. Maxey was arraigned and pleaded innocent Monday to the new charges, all accusing him of burglaries to Rantoul businesses. His bond was set at $15,000.
Rantoul police Sgt. Jeff Wooten said police were sent to investigate a burglary alarm at the Rural King, 1700 E. Grove St., Rantoul, at 3:30 a.m. Friday. Shortly after that, officers were dispatched to the Rantoul Pizza Hut at 2020 Lon Drive, he said.
At 5 a.m. Saturday, Rantoul police were dispatched to investigate a break-in at the Bank of Rantoul, 201 E. Champaign St., Rantoul. While there, they discovered another burglary at Monical's Pizza, 320 E. Champaign St., Rantoul, Wooten said. Police also learned of a break-in at Re/Max Realty, 334 S. Tanner St., Rantoul.
Investigation led to Maxey as a suspect, and police found him at his home, Wooten said. When police tried to arrest him, he ran away and into a house in the 600 block of Autumn Fields, where officers found him hiding behind a furnace.
In all the recent burglaries, very little or no property was reported missing, Wooten said.
Court records show Maxey pleaded guilty on April 8 to earlier charges of burglary and possession of a controlled substance. He is due to be sentenced on those cases May 28.
