Update to be given on new Savoy school
SAVOY -- Community members will have a chance to learn more this week about the design and construction of a new elementary school in Savoy.
The Champaign school district will hold a community meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Savoy Recreation Center, 402 W. Graham Drive. Architects from OWP/P Cannon Design of Chicago will give an update on the design and the construction schedule for the school and answer questions.
The 60,000-square-foot school is to be built at 304 Prairie Rose, in the Prairie Fields subdivision. Construction is to begin later this spring, and the $18 million project is to be completed in the summer of 2012.
The new school will replace the current Carrie Busey Elementary School at 1605 W. Kirby Ave., C. The students and teachers from Carrie Busey will move to the new Savoy school when it opens. The school will include a second story for fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms, and the school will be certified as a green building. The village of Savoy has created a park with playground next to the school site.
The architects met with the school's staff several times during the design process, and the district sought input on the color patterns for the exterior of the school through an online survey conducted earlier this year.
