Urbana school board 4-vote outcome won't change
URBANA -- There are nearly two dozen absentee ballots outstanding in the county, and about a half-dozen provisional ballots that may yet be counted.
But they won't change the results of the election for an Urbana school board representative for subdistrict 6.
In the only contested Urbana school board race, Paul Poulosky received four more votes that incumbent Steve Summers.
None of the outstanding absentee ballots are for residents who would have voted in that race, and only two of the provisional ballots are, said Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten.
The county clerk's office will count late absentee ballots and eligible provisional ballots on April 19.
Following that final vote canvass, a candidate has five days to file a petition for a discovery recount, according to guidelines from the Illinois State Board of Elections. A discovery recount does not change the results of an election but can be used to gather evidence for an election contest.
A candidate may contest the results of an election in circuit court within 30 days of a final vote canvass.
Summers doesn't expect to ask for a discovery recount or to challenge the results.
"At this point, I'm not thinking along those lines," he said Wednesday.
