Westville schools, union in contract talks

WESTVILLE — School officials said Wednesday they are optimistic that a new contract can be settled for the teachers' union soon.

The current, three-year contract with about 150 members of the Westville Education Association will expire on June 30.

Superintendent Jim Owens said the negotiating teams for the union and the schoolboard have met once, and are scheduled to meet again on May 23. Based on the initial meeting, Owens said he was optimistic that a new deal can be reached soon.

Westville School Board President Janet Ragle echoed his optimism, saying the two sides have a good relationship, and that the last two contracts were negotiated quickly.

"We are hopeful for a smooth negotiation this time, as well," she said.

In other business, the board voted to employ Montana Willamon, the new Judith Giacoma Elementary School physical education teacher, as the cheerleading coach at Westville High School.

The school board's next regular meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 15.
