Unit 7 board issues bonds for Unity renovation
TOLONO — The school board has voted to issue $3.5 million in bonds to pay for renovations at Unity High School.
It will take about four years to pay off the bonds. Bloomington-based First Midstate Inc. is the underwriter for the bonds, which are backed by revenue from the 1 percent sales tax increase passed in 2009.
The board also approved alternate bids for upgrading mechanicals at the 54-year-old high school, the first of three phases of planned renovations. The upgrades include enhanced lighting and additional classroom circuits and outlets. A web-based system will regulate temperature in the building.
In addition, locker rooms will be renovated at a cost of $100,000. Renovations will include new lockers, flooring, lighting and fixtures designed with sensors to conserve electricity and water.
Work is scheduled to begin the first week in June and is expected to be done by mid-September. After school resumes, work will be done after hours to avoid interfering with classes.
St. Louis-based performance contractor CTS is spearheading the renovation project.
