Property value drop hurts Catlin schools budget

CATLIN — The school district will receive about $11,000 less in local property tax revenue than it did last year, Superintendent Gary Lewis said Thursday.

Lewis said the overall value of property in the district decreased by about $222,000 this year, so the district will collect less money in property taxes.

School officials now expect to collect about $2.17 million in property taxes.

The reduction means that the district may have to tap into its reserves to help perform some general building maintenance and help pay for some expected health insurance cost increases.

"I am not very surprised," Lewis said.

In other business, Catlin Grade School Principal Beau Fretueg said grade school students failed to meet adequate yearly progress on the reading portion of the ISAT tests this past spring.

Only 78.6 percent of grade school students met or exceeded standards on state reading tests last spring, about 6 percent fewer than were needed in order to meet the state's adequate yearly progress goals.

On the same tests, 90.3 percent of Catlin Grade School students met or exceeded state goals in math.
