Champaign schools could see surpluses
CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school district could see slight budget surpluses for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, and for the next fiscal year.
Chief Financial Officer Gene Logas gave a preliminary presentation on the 2011-12 budget to the school board Monday night.
Logas believes the district will eventually get all the money owed it from the state for the current fiscal year, although the payments won't come until after the end of the fiscal year, he said. The budget was based on the district receiving 70 percent of state revenue this year.
Also, $1 million more in stimulus money than expected was carried over to this year, Logas said.
The district may be able to reduce the planned $1 million in cuts in the 2012-13 school year to $500,000 in cuts, he said, and administrators are already looking at how they might make those cuts.
Logas said the district's budget projections are improving, because of some grant and stimulus money the district has been able to carry over, because the district will see more growth in property tax revenue, and because health costs increased less than expected.
But Logas expects the district will likely see a deficit budget in 2012-13, when it will have no more stimulus money and property tax revenue growth will be smaller.
In other business Monday, the board approved hiring Elizabeth DeGruy as director of special education. DeGruy is currently assistant director of special education for the district. She's a former special education teacher at Jefferson Middle School and in Urbana.
She replaces Sarah Evans, who resigned in March.
