Interim superintendent to return at Heritage
HOMER — Interim superintendent Allen Hall, who agreed to fill the gap last year when Andrew Larson resigned, will serve the Heritage school district for another academic year.
Board members set Hall's salary at last year's figure of $66,000, with a 120-workday limit to maintain his status as a Teachers' Retirement System retiree.
Salaries for other administrative staff for the upcoming year were set as follows:
— High school Principal Tom Davis at $79,000, with a $3,000 raise over last year.
— Elementary and junior high Principal Chris Kerns at $82,100, with no increase from last year.
— District bookkeeper Deana Wolf at $21.53 per hour, with a 53-cent-per-hour increase from last year.
In other business:
— A new gravel parking lot at the elementary/junior high has been installed by a volunteer workforce, led by Homer resident Brian Richardson.
The lot was needed to replace lost parking due to the new gym and cafeteria construction, but overruns on that project left no money for installation of a parking lot. Board member Kevin Wienke worked closely with Richardson and other community members to complete the lot.
The district has presented Richardson with free athletic passes for his family as a token of gratitude, Hall said.
— The district will put its former preschool building in Longview up for sale with an asking price of $10,000.
That figure is based on Hall's research into the property's current market value. His recommendation to sell the building, based on the $2,000-per-year cost of maintaining the empty facility, met with agreement from board members.
State cuts to early-education funding put an end to the preschool program before the start of last academic year.
The facility had been a gift to the district from the Longview Methodist Church that had assembled there before it dissolved.
— The schedule of regular school board meetings has been changed for the upcoming year.
Starting in August, meetings will fall on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Next month's regular meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 13. All meetings will be at the Homer building.
— A district long-range planning session is set for 6 p.m. June 30, at the Homer building. Board members plan to discuss the financial outlook for the district, with emphasis on future needs for transportation, food service, technology upgrades, curriculum and facilities upkeep. The meeting is open to the public.
