Report makes suggestions for Georgetown-Ridge Farm school
GEORGETOWN — Mary Miller Junior High School was a focus of discussion among Georgetown-Ridge Farm school officials Monday.
A report was given about a recent assessment of the school, a proposal to add after-school instruction was introduced, and school board members are discussing adding a language-arts teacher to the school next year.
At the invitation of the district, the school was evaluated by members of the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform of Savoy and the Champaign-Ford counties Regional Office of Education.
Mary Miller Junior High Principal Lisa Gocken said the assessment was done to re-evaluate the decision to switch from a junior high to a middle school model in 2005 — with students attending shorter classes with fewer different teachers over the course of their school day — and because students in the school failed to meet adequate-yearly-progress goals in 2009 and 2010.
The assessment concluded that students like the school and feel safe there, that the staff and administration want to do what is best, and that the middle school model is helping.
The evaluators recommended adding staff, lengthening the school day — which currently runs from 8 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. in the district — training new staff in the middle school concept, hiring a curriculum director for the district and instituting a consistent curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade.
