PBL budget projects deficits

PAXTON — Deficits are projected in every major fund in the Paxton-Buckley-Loda school district's budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

The PBL school board last week approved a tentative budget, from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012. The board also voted to place the tentative budget on public display for 30 days before formally adopting the final budget in September.

The budget projects deficits in the district's three main funds — the educational fund ($131,279), operations and maintenance fund ($159,785) and transportation fund ($100,090) — as well as others.

Superintendent Cliff McClure said the educational fund deficit is due to the loss of about $900,000 in revenue — including about $650,000 in federal funds that were included in a Jobs in Education bill that is not being continued. The rest of the revenue loss is due to a loss of 5 percent of the district's state aid, McClure said.

McClure said the state "prorated state aid at 95 percent" of existing levels — the first time that has happened since he became superintendent in 2003.

"We'll be receiving right under $300,000 less in state aid than we did last year," McClure said.
