Danville school board to get proposal for planning future

DANVILLE — Danville school board members this week hope to move forward with finalizing a long-term strategic plan for the district.

Superintendent Mark Denman said administrators have reviewed the initial draft that includes 22 goals and 156 strategies recommended over the past year by more than 900 focus-group participants including district staff, students and community members.

The goals and strategies cover the areas of academic achievement and curriculum, communication and marking, facilities, financing, human resources and staffing, parental and community involvement and safety and discipline.

The Danville School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m on Wednesday at the Jackson Building, 516 N. Jackson St., Danville. A copy of the agenda is available online at http://bit.ly/pp8qT6.

Denman said administrators on Wednesday will present board members with a proposed plan that prioritizes the goals and strategies and spreads implementation out over the next few years.

"We're looking at doing between 10 and 15 a year," Denman said, adding the board will be able to make revisions or offer other input.

Some of the recommendations included piloting a longer school day at one elementary school; expanding alternative education; reducing class size and/or providing more support for teachers; considering adding more nurses, social workers and disciplinarians; providing more parent-teacher time and increasing communication among district staff and between the district and the community.

Also at the meeting, board members will vote on whether to accept the district's 2010 audit. Also, Associate Superintendent Dianna Kirk and Human Resources Director Kathy Houpt will review Illinois education reform legislation.

Board members will continue a discussion on whether the district should change the way it purchases food. Currently, it does so on a line-by-line bid process, according to Food Service Director Greg Lazzell.

Earlier this month, Lazzell told the board that the district has the potential to save $20,000 a year by joining a group purchasing organization or a buying co-op and awarding the bid to a single vendor with the best bottom line pricing, commonly referred to as a prime or preferred vendor agreement.

Board members also will discuss launching a Junior ROTC at Danville High School.
