UI students to vote on smoke-free campus

University of Illinois students have a chance to vote this week on whether they want a smoke-free campus.

The idea comes from UI Student Trustee Hannah Ehrenberg, who collected over 3,000 signatures to get the issue on the student ballot.

Right now, smoking is not allowed in university buildings, but it is permitted in common areas like the Quad.

Ehrenberg says the majority of students she spoke with favor a smoke-free campus, and she says the university admisinstration is open to the idea, as well.

She says the only question mark at this point is what areas on campus the smoking ban would effect.

Ehrenberg says if the concept is approved by students this week, it would then move through several student and faculity committees to iron out details.  The Academic Senate and Chancellor's office would give final approval to a smoke-free campus.

Ehrenberg says that could take up to two years.

Students are casting their votes online Tuesday and Wednesday.

I am so tired of this over reaching.  This is a university for God's sake.  Open to different ideas and beliefs.  Isn't the current smoking law enough?  Take the fascism elsewhere, not on a public campus.
