Ikenberry says he'd help Penn State if asked

A former president of the University of Illinois and former administrator at Penn State University says the sexual abuse scandal at the school is an unprecedented tragedy.

Stanley Ikenberry was the President of the UI from 1979 to 1995 and again in 2010 after former president B. Joseph White resigned following the admissions scandal.

Ikenberry served as a faculty member and Senior Vice President for Adiminstration at Penn State.

He says the situation is heartwrenching for the victims and their families as well as very damaging for the institution.

Ikenberry, who joined the Center for the Study of Higher Education at Penn State in November, says he would assist the school if university officials were to ask for his help.

Rod Erickson has already been named the Interim President of the school.

Ikenberry says he is concerned that Penn State's Board of Trustees was not kept informed of the situation as it was unfolding over the years.

He says the scandal will give the school a chance to learn from its mistakes to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

Ikenberry made the comments Thursday on A Penny for Your Thoughts with Jim Turpin on NewsTalk 1400 WDWS-AM.
