Danville school board approves raises for administrators
DANVILLE — Some Danville schools administrators are getting a raise this year.
The Danville school board on Wednesday voted 4-3 to approve a 2011-12 administrative salary chart for 18 principals, assistant principals and directors, and two administrators who retired in June.
The chart doesn't include first-year administrators and those who have announced their retirement, whose salaries already have been set. It also doesn't include Superintendent Mark Denman, whose salary will be set later.
Denman recommended increases for 17 of the current administrators. He recommended the salary of Principal Mark Goodwin, who moved from North Ridge Middle School to Edison Elementary, remain at $82,834 to reflect "the downsizing of his responsibilities."
Denman also recommending giving Business and Finance Director Heather McKiernan and Buildings and Grounds Director Ron Henton a $1,500 bonus in addition to their salary increases — McKiernan for completing coursework to receive her chief business official endorsement, and Henton for his "excellent" work overseeing the South View Middle School renovation.
In addition, Denman recommended giving a $3,153 merit bonus to retired Edison Elementary Principal Mark Lindvahl and a $1,961 merit bonus to retired Food Service Director Brenda Demos, both of whom stepped down in June.
Denman said all increases and merit bonuses — given to administrators who are at the top of their salary range — were based on merit, and the average increase of 2.32 percent was equal to the average "step" increase for teaching staff this year. That's in keeping with administrative pay guidelines established in 2009.
This is the first year they were applied as administrators took a voluntary salary freeze in the 2010-11 school year.
Board members Frank Young, Dan Brown and Steve Bragorgos voted against the salaries, but not because they think the staff aren't deserving. "It's the ability to pay, in my mind, that should drive the ability to give anything," Young said.
Here are the other approved salaries. (Amounts don't include pension benefits.):
Sharon Phillips, Danville High assistant principal: $81,000 and a merit bonus of $1,004.
Darin Chambliss, Danville High assistant principal: $74,776, up from $73,868.
