St. Joseph district misses test standard for first time
ST. JOSEPH — The school board heard this week that district did not meet "adequate yearly progress" under federal No Child Left Behind law this year.
It is the first year that the district has failed to meet or exceed the state's ever-rising standard.
Superintendent Todd Pence said both schools within the district made adequate progress, but a subgroup within the district —low-income children — did not and so the district did not.
The subgroup needed to have 74.7 percent of students make state standards in reading; 65.6 percent of these students did.
"We will identify these kids and see what we can do," Pence said.
Pence also pointed out that without subgroups the district would have met the mark.
School board President Jon Foreman said the district should have been identifying these students all along and making sure they got the extra help they needed.
