Electronics recycling set for Saturday
CHAMPAIGN — This year's third countywide residential electronics recycling event will be held Saturday morning at The News-Gazette distribution center in north Champaign.
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at 3202 Apollo Drive, C. Motorists are asked to drive to the facility by way of East Olympian Drive. Motorists can drive up to the center, and teams of workers will unload electronics items from cars.
Among the items that are eligible to be collected are televisions of any size or type, VCRS, DVD players, MP3 players, video game consoles, microwaves, computers, computer monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards and mice, mobile phones, cables, fax machines and speakers. There is no charge although there is a limit of 10 items per person.
Area governments and private sponsors including The News-Gazette are supporting the collection event.
A fourth collection event will be held Oct. 29, said Susan Monte, the county's recycling coordinator. In two earlier collection events, nearly 89 tons of residential electronics have been collected and recycled, according to Monte. Most of the materials are either televisions or monitors, she said.
The need to recycle electronics will become critical next year, they said. After Jan. 1, 2012, televisions, monitors and other electronics will be banned from landfills in Illinois.
The items collected at Saturday's event will not go to a landfill. Some will be refurbished and remarketed; others will be dismantled and separated into basic recyclable commodities.

It gives people of the surrounding communities a free and eco-friendly way of disposing of things that might otherwise be difficult to get rid of. Everything about this event was well-organized and professional - from the multitude of signs giving directions and information, to the people directing traffic, and the speed and smoothness of moving through the line.
