No cause for concern over 'bleachy' water taste

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois American Water customers who might notice a slight bleachy smell or taste in their water have nothing to be concerned about.

Randy West, spokesman for the water company, said the chlorine is increased routinely for disinfection purposes.

"We do this every year. In the summer when the temperature warms up, the chlorine dissipates quicker so by adding more chlorine, we can maintain residuals more evenly across the system. Customers may notice more of an odor or taster of chlorine or bleach. It's not anything to be concerned about," West said.

The process, referred to as switching to "free chlorine," began Wednesday and will last for several months. It does not affect water pressure.

Anyone with questions or concerns can call the water company at 217-352-7001.
