Danville Habitat store recycles electronics
DANVILLE — The Habitat for Humanity Restore has become a registered electronics recycling facility, according to facility manager Bob Marble.
On Tuesday, players with the Danville Dashers hockey team were working as volunteers, loading a Dumpster with electronics that the Habitat Restore in downtown Danville has already collected. The container of electronics will be transported to Bryant Industries for processing.
Marble said the restore, which accepts donations of all sorts of household items for resale to raise money to build more Habitat homes, has registered as an electronics recycling collector through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. The IEPA maintains a list of registered electronics collectors, recyclers and refurbishers on its web site at epa.state.il.us/.
As of Jan. 1, Illinois law prohibits electronics from being thrown in the regular waste stream for burial in landfills. The law includes televisions, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, DVRs and more.
Marble said the Restore has accepted electronics donations in the past, but now it's making those items part of its mission and has arranged for Bryant Industries to regularly take the electronics for processing.
Bryant Industries at 1346 Warrington Ave., Danville, and Advantage Recycling, 14 S. Henning Road, Danville, also accept electronics for recycling free at their locations. The WITS Recycling Center at 1507 N. Bowman Ave. in Danville was a registered electronics recycling collection site, but permanently closed its doors earlier this month due to issues with its building that the non-profit, St. Louis-based organization could not afford to fix.
Marble said it makes sense for the Habitat Restore to accept electronics, because people who drop off donations of other household items often have electronics to donate as well. He said the electronics items are ultimately either re-purposed or are disassembled and the parts and materials salvaged, including plastic, glass and metals.
He said donations will be accepted during Restore business hours only. Those hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
