CHAMPAIGN – The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District plans to finish vaccinating elementary school children for H1N1/swine flu by the end of next week and to finish all school vaccinations by the end of the month, Administrator Julie Pryde said.

After elementary students have all had a chance for vaccinations, Pryde said, public health will move on to middle schools and then high schools.

"We hope to be able to start community clinics by the end of the month," she said.

As of Friday, 3,217 vaccinations have been administered in local schools, Pryde said.

Once all children and young adults under age 24 are vaccinated, public clinics will be scheduled in December for some adults ages 25-64.

That next wave of vaccinations for adults is intended to serve those with chronic health conditions first, Pryde said, but since each person's health can't be verified at vaccination clinics, she hopes the public will cooperate voluntarily.

Elementary vaccinations will continue next week as follows:

– Monday: Wiley and Yankee Ridge in Urbana; Westview, Dr. Howard, Countryside and Next Generation in Champaign; St. Malachy in Rantoul.

– Tuesday: Heritage, Gifford, St. Joseph, St. Thomas in Philo and Holy Cross in Champaign.

– Thursday: Lincoln Trail, Sangamon and Middletown Early Childhood Center in Mahomet; Fisher Grade School.

– Friday: Robeson, Bottenfield and South Side in Champaign.

Children age 9 and under who have been vaccinated will require a booster shot, and booster shot clinics will be held in December, Pryde said.

In Vermilion County:

The Vermilion County Health Department says it provided more than 2,000 vaccinations this week, about half to children and young adults under 24.

Health department spokeswoman Linda Bolton said the next H1N1 clinic will be held today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the health department, 200 S. College St., Danville.

The next Vermilion County vaccination clinic is set for: 1 to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Civic Center in McFerren Park, Hoopeston. These vaccinations are for the at-risk population: pregnant women, health care workers and emergency medical personnel, those who care for infants under six months, children and youth ages six months to 24 years, and people ages 25 to 64 with chronic health conditions.
