Organizers officially dub this year's marathon a success

With 5,000 more runners than last year's inaugural run, the 2010 Christie Clinic Marathon is being called a success by organizers.

"It's gone as well as could be expected," said University of Illinois police Lt. Roy Acree, special-events point man for that department. "There are still some rough edges we need to iron out like where we could use more fencing and more volunteers. We still need to work on getting the course shut down a little closer to start time. All these things can be worked out and we expect to have an even better race next year."

"I think overall, everybody was very pleased," said Champaign police Sgt. Scott Friedlein.

He said race organizer Jan Seeley timed the about 2,420 marathon runners as they crossed the start line about 7:40 a.m. He said it took them 11 minutes to get across, compared with 13 minutes last year, when there were only about 1,920 running the marathon.

"We did corral them better," he said of this year's runners.

With the race being held a month later than it was last year, warmer temperatures were an issue.

"We had more medical transports. The humidity was a huge factor. It caused a lot of dehydration issues," Friedlein said.

Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said the number of people who went to hospitals was put at 22. That was for a range of issues, including cramps, ankle sprains and loss of consciousness from heat, but there were no reports of serious injuries or illnesses.

Streets were reopened in both cities by 2 p.m., Acree said.

Friedlein called the about 2,300 volunteers "absolutely incredible."
