Cancer society seeks help from cosmetologists
SPRINGFIELD – Cancer treatments can take a toll on a woman's appearance, but cosmetologists willing to volunteer a little time can help give cancer patients a boost of confidence.
The American Cancer Society is looking for licensed cosmetologists in 35 Illinois counties to help with the next series of Look Good ... Feel Better programs.
Volunteers teach patients beauty and wig styling techniques to overcome the effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
Volunteers undergo training before meeting with patients. The next training class will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Champaign Public Library, Room 222.
Volunteers are instructed about how to teach beauty and skin care techniques and disguising hair loss.
Look Good ... Feel Better is offered under a partnership between the American Cancer Society, Personal Care Products Council Foundation and National Cosmetology Association.
Volunteer cosmetologists are needed in the following counties in eastern Illinois: Champaign, Clark, Clay, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Fayette, Ford, Iroquois, Jasper, Lawrence, Moultrie, Piatt, Richland, Shelby and Vermilion.
Volunteers are also needed in these western Illinois counties: Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Cass, Christian, Greene, Hancock, Logan, Macoupin, Menard, Montgomery, Morgan, Pike, Sangamon, Schuyler and Scott.
Volunteer hours are flexible, according to the cancer society.
