Provena puts Covenant, United Samaritans under one exec

URBANA – Provena's two hospitals in Urbana and Danville are being reunited under a single chief executive once again.

David Bertauski, the CEO of Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana, retired effective today, Provena's corporate office in Mokena announced.

Mike Brown, the CEO of Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville, will lead both hospitals as regional president and CEO.

The two hospitals had been led separately for several years, and before that under Bertauski on a regional basis.

Provena Health spokeswoman Lisa Lagger said Brown will divide his time between the two hospitals, and each one will retain its own local community board of directors.

There may be some shared services, Lagger said, but each hospital will remain focused on the needs of its own community.

"Provena remains keenly aware that health care remains best delivered with a local focus," she added.

Bertauski joined Provena in 2005, originally leading both hospitals. Brown became CEO of the Danville hospital in 2008.

Mr. Bertauski was a great CEO for the hospital and community. The remodeling of the lobby and keeping the hospital floating during tough fiscal times was a great accomplishment. He will be missd by many in Champaign Urbana more than they miss the Auxilary.

I would have to say that on the outside, it appears that Provena forced Mr Bertauski out. CEO's don't just "retire" effective immediately. It would be quite interesting to hear the other side of the story, but with NDA's these days, we'll probably never know the truth of what happened today.
