Cancer fund drive planned in Gifford
GIFFORD — An event to raise funds to fight cancer will be held Saturday in Gifford Park.
Proceeds will go to the Christie Clinic Oncology Department and to fund a nursing scholarship.
The Passion of the Pink event will kick off at 2:15 p.m. when a car driven by Adam Miller, son of Gifford resident Kathy Albers, will arrive in the community. Miller will be traveling from Washington state to the east coast in "Nissy," his 2008 Nissan 350Z. The car, which is pink, has been adorned with various symbols.
Miller, 34, who started the trip last weekend from Clarkston, Wash, will make four other fundraising stops on the way.
Other events that day will include music by DJ Dustin Riefsteck, food vendors, a balloon creator from 2 to 5 p.m., silent auction, 50/50 drawing, raffle for a ride in Nissy, Passion of the Pink bracelet and magnet sales, horseshoe tournament and hula hoop contest.
There will also be children's games with prizes, a 1K run starting at 3 p.m. that will be divided by age group, hula hoop contest at 3:30 p.m., children's bike-decorating contest, Zumba (dance fitness) at 4:30 p.m. and presentation to the Christie Clinic Oncology Department at 6:30 p.m.
A balloon release will follow the prayer and blessings by the Rev. Steven Lombardo of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
The event, which was Miller's idea, is to honor all those who have been or are involved with cancer.
