2 additional cooling centers set to open in Danville, Champaign
Two more options for beating the heat this week are available in Danville and Champaign.
The Salvation Army in Danville has opened a cooling station for anyone needing to get out of the heat.
"Extreme, hot temperatures are not to be taken lightly," said Judith Lowder, Capt. Judith Lowder of the local citadel. "Hot weather can be just as hazardous to a person's health as freezing winter temperatures."
The Salvation Army's cooling station, 855 E. Fairchild St., Danville, is open beginning today from 1 to 4 p.m.
"Our chapel will be available to anyone needing to get out of the heat. Enjoy a some cool water and relax for a bit," Lowder said in a statement.
The cooling station will be open as long as temperatures are nearing 100 degrees, according to Sharon Sawka, Salvation Army social services director.
Call the Salvation Army at 442-5911 for information.
The Salvation Army has no money for its cooling station and will welcome monetary donations, to help cover higher utility bills and cost of water. Bottled water donations are also appreciated.
In Champaign County, the Stevick Senior Center, 48 E. Main St. in downtown Champaign, is also open as a cooling center.
Owned and funded by The News-Gazette, the center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and has a television, shelves of books and comfortable chairs, as well as some organized activities. For information, call 359-6500.
