Vermilion agency offers school immunizations

DANVILLE — If getting immunizations is on your back-to-school to-do list, the Vermilion County Health Department offers a range of vaccines for both children and adults.

The health department's immunization program is available to families of any income. Immunization clinics are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays in August by appointment, and evening hours are available. The schedule can be viewed at the health department's website, http://www.vchd.org. Appointments can be made by calling 431-2662 extension 249.

Children entering school or preschool are required to be up-to-date on certain vaccinations in order to register.

Through the federal Vaccine for Children program, the health department can offer vaccines at a greatly reduced cost, and most children under the age of 19 qualify for the program. For those who qualify, there is a $15 fee per vaccination, but some children may need multiple vaccinations. There is no charge for an office visit, and no co-payment.

Parents or legal guardians do need to sign paperwork, and will need to bring the children's immunization records.

The fees for additional services, such as adult TB testing, are listed on the health department's website.

"There are a lot of expenses associated with getting ready for the school year," Public Health Administrator Shirley Hicks said in a news release. "We hope that people will utilize the services at the health department to help reduce the costs of their immunizations."

I remember when immunizations used to be free. Where do our tax dollars go besides administration?
